...my friend A sent out a blast email inviting our cadre to come along with her to the orientation session at Greater DC Cares this past week. I used to volunteer as a tutor at a charter school nearby my apartment but wanted to try a different kind of volunteering, like maybe Habitat for Humanity (watch me nail my shoe to the ground or something) or community gardening or that sort of thing. Also (and I feel like a jerk) but tutoring every week got difficult because my weeks change, work changes, people make plans, I have things to prepare for the next day (insert excuse here).
Anyway, DC Cares is great because you sign up and they send you a calendar every month and you decide what you want to do. Some tasks are regular, meaning the expect you every week, two weeks, etc but most are one-time (although they repeat throughout the month). So you can play sports with kids, clean up gardens and parks, deliver meals to housebound folks, tutor, and so on. I'll update when I've done one or two events, but it's a low-commitment way to get involved in the community.
