Scam Alert - and just another story about how crazy dumb stuff always happens to me

...so I open my mail yesterday and there's a collection notice from the very official-sounding Allied Interstate (ooh, they all work together! they cross state lines! they must mean business!) saying I owe $224 on an American Express card I'm pretty sure I cancelled almost a year ago. I transferred the debt on that card to an MBNA American Express with a 0% rate for six months. So, this morning I call Allied Interstate and get a woman on the phone, who I'll call Chip (as in, on her shoulder). Our conversation goes something like this:
Me: well, I thought I cancelled this card. I never recieved any bills.
Chip: Well, you didn't. You made charges to Amazon.com for $18 and these are all the finance charges. And incidentally, the bill is a luxury (she actually used the word "luxury" like anyone gets their credit card bill and goes "Ahh - how wonderful!") and even if you don't receive it, you're still liable.
Me: That's where we're differing - I thought this card was cancelled and didn't make any charges on it. And never got any bills, so I have no idea what this is all for.
Chip: ARE YOU CALLING ME A LIAR?
Me: of course not, I'm just trying to understand why -
Chip: BECAUSE WE HAD YOUR ADDRESS ON FILE, WHICH MEANS THEY HAD IT TO. SO I MUST BE A LIAR IF I'M SAYING YOU GOT THOSE STATEMENTS.
Me: I'm just saying something is not -
Chip: FINE, I'M A LIAR. GOODBYE.

And she hangs up the phone on me. Now I am livid and want to complain about her (and of course, at this moment I'm thinking her hanging up on me will be justification for not paying) so I call back. Taped recording welcomes me to Allied Interstate and transfers me to a call operator. SHE PROMPTLY HANGS UP THE PHONE AGAIN. AND AGAIN. AND AGAIN.

I'm not kidding, I called about 12 times and each time, this bit** hung up on me! So my helpful cubicle-mate suggests I google them and see if there's another way to contact them. I do, and what do I find? Dozens of article like this one and this one about Allied Interstate and others' predatory tactics.

Even though I thought it would be fruitless, I put on my best "desperate chick" voice and called American Express - and immediately remembered why I'd happily paid the $75 annual fee for six years. They acknowledged that they should've cancelled the card and were sending bills to the wrong address, an address I vacated three years ago (contrary to Chip's assertion about my luxurious bills). They specifically told me when Allied Interstate calls again I can tell them to piss off, which I am so going to enjoy.

Now I can book that March trip to Miami with the $200 I didn't have to pay!
