I was supposed to be on a flight to NY to hang with my moms and pops but the stinkin weather is keeping me down. However, all is not lost because a) the chickies are meeting at St. Ex tonight, which will no doubt start as an evening of wine, deep thoughts, and perfect hair and end with someone screaming the words to "You Shook Me (All Night Long)" but moreso because b) I have discovered Amy Winehouse. I read a bunch of reviews in the WaPo, Times, in the course of my daily reads and thought, hmmm, maybe I should check her out, but whenever I read a smashing review and seek out the music, I'm let down by hammering mediocrity. HOWEVER. I am obsessed, enthralled, she immediately made my playlist "moody jazz" which has really been a sacrosanct altar to the female greats - Billie, Sarah V., Nina, and Ella's cut of "Sophisticated Lady" (most else Ella is on the "fun jazz" and "loverly jazz" playlists along with Sarah's "polka dots and moonbeams", maybe my favorite love song. Oh, and Etta James' "Sunday Kind of Love" until that commercial made me hear it too often.). She is now in the mix with that totally raunch, cutting voice. I've wondered what the modern equivalent of Billie is - not necessarily the life and dying in a hospital with cash strapped to her leg - but the music, how can jazz move into If I listen to
"Back to Black" one more time, my neighbors might complain...I'm sure it's considered quite rude to wear your Ipod with your friends at St. Ex, but I don't know if I can pull away...
Best part of posting, gave me an excuse to watch the video on YouTube!
